Horse Training and Schooling at West Spring Stud

Horse Training at West Spring Stud
The step-by-step method of training horses systematically is not without its problems.
Lorri Ould Training Zurito at West Spring StudIt isn’t rocket-science but neither is it straightforward for most horse-owners. If it were so easy to obtain consistently good results working with horses we would not require trainers, teachers or instructors.  To learn from a book, or to watch a video or DVD is an excellent way of obtaining more information on how to train horses. Attending seminars and lectures or watching demonstrations are highly educational too and very often inspirational. But what happens when you return home to your horse which has not read the book or watched the DVD?

At West Spring Stud our horses are being trained continuously – their work is regular and methodical.  Schooling exercises which incorporate grid-work or a little jumping guarantee a better performance.  So too does lunging, free-schooling and long-reining. Hacking helps to keep them fresh and interested.  We know our horses appreciate being turned out to relax, this prevents the training regime from becoming too dull and monotonous.

Improving schooling issues at West Spring Stud 2011

As well as schooling at home we travel to other yards – this ensures our horses are able to work in areas which are not too familiar and is therefore of benefit when it comes to competing.  Stallions are especially distracted away from home and have to learn to concentrate on their work – regardless of the surroundings.

The ethos at West Spring Stud is that competition results are a gauge to the progress of the horses’ training.  The pressure on the horse is not to win but to improve.
